Udemy Redesign - Shopping Online Courses

Did you know 58% of participants in usability testing found the layout of the search page overwhelming?

Overview

I participated in a 5-week UX Design Challenge created by Iterate UX. I was assigned to a team of 4 to work on this UX Design Challenge. During the first week, the team had to decide on what challenge prompt to take on and we decided to work on educational website redesign. We brainstormed about any educational websites that we could revamp. We choose Udemy.

My Role

  • UX Researcher (Survey, Persona)

  • UI Designer (Sketches, Low Fidelity Wireframe)

Teammates

  • Alicia M

  • Liz Hamm

  • Nicole Cupp

  • Sarah (Mentor)

Scope

  • March 2023 - April 2023 (5 weeks)

Tools

  • Figma, Mural

  • Google Meet, Google Drive, Slack

Problem

Millions of people are taking steps to increase their knowledge, skills, and expand career options by using E-learning websites like Udemy to strive for these goals. However, many users have additional responsibilities such as demanding jobs, families, and more that require most of their time. In order to reach their goal, they need a platform that is responsive, accessible, and flexible.

E-learners on Udemy’s site are overwhelmed by the number of courses offered, experience difficulty finishing courses due to motivation or time constraints, and have difficulty choosing a course after narrowing their interests to two or three possibilities.

Solution

We found from the user feedback conducted in the usability testing, we need to:

  • Minimize the aesthetic effect to a given pages to prevent information overload.

  • Draw more attention to certain Udemy features that users enjoy or may missed.

  • Design to better adhere to accessibility standards.

Timeline

Competitive Analysis

We decided to do competitive analysis to view other eLearning competitors and see what are Udemy’s advantages and opportunities to enhance their user experience and add business value.

Key Findings – User Interview and User Survey

We conducted a survey and received 32 responses to understand needs, motivations, and pain points of e-learning. We also did usability testing to ask participants about their experience with e-learning platforms.

We found that in the survey :

  • 65% of respondents rarely or sometimes use online learning platforms.

  • 62% of respondents used online learning platforms to do career change.

In the usability testing, we found that:

  • Participants felt overwhelmed with the amount of content presented on the landing page.

  • Participants indicated in the usability testing, found the pop-information modal while going through courses in the Udemy search page frustrating.

Personas

From usability testing and survey, we created two persona: George, a seasoned career changer and Mandy, a upskilling professional.

How Might We Questions and Problem Statement

We then asked ourselves these questions:

  1. How might we better highlight the main factors that influence users as they’re deciding to buy a specific course?

  2. How might we increase user accountability in order to motivate them to finish courses in Udemy and take others?

  3. How might we account for users’ limited time and focus so they can maximize the benefits the courses offer?

Then, we came up with a problem statement:

There exists both an abundance of resources to self-learn and also an increased need and desire of users to self-learn skills for personal or career motivations. However, users face barriers to being able to complete courses online such as : time, ability to focus, and accountability.

Sketches

Low-fidelity wireframe

We decided to focus on the landing page and search page as they were where most of the pain points was shown in the usability testing. We did end of working on the course page and category page but due to time crunch, we couldn’t turn it into high fidelity wireframe.

High Fidelity Wireframe

We currently only have the landing page and search page in high fidelity wireframes since we ran out time to finish working on the other pages.

Learnings

When it comes to redesign, we don’t want to change visual design as it can put off users and give less user retention. For this redesign, Udemy didn’t have like Design System so my teammates had to make one. We took a while with the research phase, which helped but it would have been better to try to time manage our deliverables as we would have been able to do usability testing on the current redesign we did.

Aftermath

We ended up winning the UX Design Challenge with the excellent User Research conducted. You can watch the video below on the presentation we submitted. It was great to work with talented individuals in this design challenge and I hope to take what I learned and use it in my next job or side project. 🥰
